Kitchen Designs
Posted by dirttodone
The family met with the Golden Eagle designer again. This time the focus was on the kitchen. It is an important room for the family as they plan to entertain at their lakehouse. They want enough room so large meals can easily be prepared in the kitchen. They want enough counterspace for multiple Nesco cookers.
And they are happy with the design they created with their designers. Below are three images of their kitchen.
The designer's images have given the family a good feel for what their kitchen will look like once completed. The excitement is building for the family. They are anxious to move forward. The designer is going to send the family renderings of the exterior of the home based on the floor plans and other features the family has selected. Watch for those images later this week. Design Consult Schedule
Posted by dirttodone
The family has made some floor plan decisions and are ready for the next steps. They want more than one master suite. They want two additional bedrooms. They want a large kitchen that can serve as a gathering space. Now they are ready to meet with a Golden Eagle designer. Their consultation is scheduled for Monday. During this consultation, the family will provide the designer with some rough sketches they have worked up. The designer will then work "magic" and create the floor plan. If all goes well, this will be the final floor plan. Otherwise, a second consultation will be scheduled for the family to work with the designer to create a new floor plan based on what is created Monday. Sketches from Monday's consultation will be posted by Tuesday morning. Creating the Floor Plan

Gathering information
Posted by dirttodone
The family is busy gathering information for their scheduled design consultation next week. They know they want a floor plan that will be welcoming to guests. They want to be able to comfortably accomodate two families with children in addition to their own family. They also want to take advantage of the views of both lakes from the lot by having large windows. Below is a lot diagram they had prepared. It shows the shape of their lot as well as the location in relation to the roads and lakes. The family expects the land to play a major role as they make design decisions, so they wanted to have a nice diagram to share with the designer. Creating the Floor Plan

Design Ideas
Posted by dirttodone
Since choosing Golden Eagle as the producer earlier in the week, the family has been discussing some preliminary design ideas. They really liked Golden Eagle's 10x10 full logs with a peeled finish. The next step will be a floor plan. The family has been drawing sketches of ideas and will meet and compare ideas soon. Then they will schedule a meeting with a designer at Golden Eagle. The family has one strong idea that they are using to make their floor plan and design decisions. They want a house to entertain in and room for everyone. Creating the Floor Plan

Decision Time
Posted by dirttodone
And the winner is.... Golden Eagle. The family has made its decision. They will purchase their log home package from Golden Eagle Log Homes. A few key points contributed to their decision. 1. Completeness of Package. A log home package from Golden Eagle is complete. As stated in an earlier post, the family was impressed that the packages include everything including the kitchen sink. 2. Location. The Golden Eagle headquarters are located within a few hours drive of the building site. 3. Company Openness. The family was happy to see how open the company was. They liked how the company offered to include them in as much of the process as they wanted to be included in. The family is even considering participating in some of the training session the company offers, like the Hands on Construction workshop. Now the family needs to make more decisions like what they want their home to look like, a floor plan, log type, lot position, etc. Choosing a Producer

Showroom Impresses and Excites Family
Posted by dirttodone

The family is very excited about their lakehouse after visiting the Golden Eagle corporate headquarters and showroom.
The headquarters includes two model homes and a large showroom.

As you can see by the number of photos they took during the visit, the family was impressed with what Golden Eagle offers in their complete packages.

Two things impacted the family the most--the completeness of the home packages and the open door policy of the company.

The family learned that a complete home package from Golden Eagle includes everything, even the kitchen sink. While most home companies sell just log shells, Golden Eagle offers nearly everything but the lighting bulbs and the paint for a home. As you can see in the photos, the family won't be limited to just one or two options for that sink either.

The family also learned about Golden Eagles open door policy. The company encourages its customers to be as involved in the building process as they choose to be. This can even include trips to the training center with their builder.
The family hasn't made any final decisions yet, but they were impressed with their visit to Golden Eagle. They are planning to think and discuss options for a few days and hopefully make the decision to either go with Golden Eagle as their log producer or keep looking by early next week.
Stay tuned.

Making some choices
Posted by dirttodone
A closing date on the land has been set. Now on to the next step in the journey-- choosing a producer. The family is now gathering and organizing their research. For more than a year the family has been attending shows, browsing the Internet and looking at magazines to determine what they want and need in their lakehouse. They have narrowed their search to producers of full log homes and have scheduled a tour of a factory showroom near the location of the property. Pictures and details will follow soon.

Results of perc test
Posted by dirttodone
The perc test is complete. The photos aren't actually those of the family's perc test on this project. They didn't get photos so the ones displayed are from a previous project but show what happens. The photos show a soil scientist digging a pit on the site where the septic system would be located to be sure the soil would support a standard septic system. He then drilled a hole to determine the water table level. Jurisdictions have laws of how far the water table must be below the septic drain field. And the results are. . .
Success. All tests revealed the property meets the requirements to support a standard septic system.

Septic/Perc Test pending
Posted by dirttodone
The family has made an offer on the land contingent on a perc test
revealing that a conventional septic system could be installed on the
land. A perc test revealing that a mound septic system would be
required would not be a deal breaker for the family. The family has
said they would just change the amount of the offer to compensate for
the mound septic system.
The results of the perc test and photos will be posted on Wednesday. Land Selection

Land they love
Posted by dirttodone
With a pre-approved budget in hand, the family has finally found a piece of land they are excited about. This comes after more than a year of their searching. A few key factors played into their decision to pursue the land they found. First and probably most important are two lakes -- a 412 acre lake visible from the front and a 20 acre lakes visible from the back. The two lakes can be seen almost at the same time. This has the family excited about creating what they are calling "a see through house" so they can easily see the water from the house. As you can see from the photos, the family loved the lakes and focused their attention there when taking photos. Second is the subdivision rules. The family likes the restrictions on home types and such to ensure high property values in the future.
Third, the subdivision is located only 5 miles from what they call "civilization," which includes retail stores, a new hospital and pizza delivery. Fourth, the subdivision has favorable utilities available, including cable and natural gas. Fifth, the area is not overly hectic or touristy. The family says they will be able to get away from it all for relaxing vacations on the property. Now that the family has found property they feel is worth pursuit, they need to find out some details on septic systems and place a bid. Stay tuned to see if this land turns out to be the right place for their "Lakehouse." Land Selection
